A tribute to our friend, Mary Brake

You, no doubt, have read the news accounts of Mary's tragic accident while vacationing with her family in Colorado just last week.

Lu Milius first introduced Mary to us, and she was invaluable as we searched for real estate space for YB&B. She also was one of our first clients. Mary was a sheer joy to be around, always giving, and a great sport--always up for anything. These are rare and precious qualities in today's world, and Mary will be missed by us and by everyone who knew her.

YOGA CLASS to HONOR  MARY-- July 4th

We would like to celebrate Mary's life through a yoga class dedicated to her.The class, taught by Thomas, will be free and is open to anyone who knew Mary-- July 4th from 10:00-11:15 am.

Lu sent us the following prayer from Mary's journal:

"Lord, let me find back the lost treasure of time: Time for gentle listening to a friend, For sharing the play of a child, For consoling a suffering person, For thinking without stress, For labor without pressure. Time to delight in birds and flowers, Blooming trees and lustrous green. Time to enjoy music, friends, and meals,Time to be silent and alone, Time to be quietly at home, Time to be present to Your mystery. Free me from the tyranny of time urgency. Let time not possess me, Neither the pressure of daily concerns. Let me not cram every moment with useful or exciting things to do or say. Let my life be a gentle preparation for the pure and precious moments of listening to you so that I may not drown in the rushing waters of practical pursuits."

Lu: When you say this prayer you are continuing Mary's gift of giving.

Interview with Tataya  by Jan Bretz

Jan: “What does yoga do for you?”

Tataya: “Yoga brings me back to "My-Self," to my center, my home, my spiritual sanctuary. Yoga helps me to distinguish who I really am behind all the veils of life’s business-- behind motherhood, instructor, wife, friend, etc.-- it reminds me my true nature, what I am made of--love & light. It allows me to be compassionate and to forgive when I am having hard times. It allows me to love "My-Self" exactly how I am without wanting or needing to change a thing. It allows me to become the highest in me.”

Jan: ”What do you observe in new practitioners?”

Tataya: “What do you mean? I see people wanting/needing nourishment, I see people exhausted, I see people sad, I see people curious,  hesitating, and then in moments, minutes or hours I see art. I see the most beautiful side of each one. I see a radiance that they didn't have or couldn't show when they walked in. I see the highest in them and just hope they can see themselves as I see them--just for one second at least.

Jan: “What do you observe in those who have practiced for a while?”

Tataya: “A miracle! I see so much grace and beauty, confidence, strength, self-esteem, a magnificent performance of their practice. With very dedicated students, the results are amazing and quick! There are a lot of very regular practitioners at the studio that started their practice with many physical issues and also emotional ones like fear, and now I see them flying. The other day one of them did a free standing headstand! without help! without a wall! and that was a beautiful miracle--to see her face light up letting her inner child shine out. The longer you practice, the more you understand how powerful a tool for your life yoga can be, not only what you do in the classroom, but really what you can incorporate into your daily life, into every little thing that you do, from brushing your teeth to being a parent.

Jan: "What's unique about practitioners at YB&B?”

Tataya: “Their dedication & love for the practice. Their willingness to learn and know more. . .”

Jan: “What do you like about teaching?”

Tataya: “It makes me feel complete. No matter what is going on in my life, when I sit down and center and align with everyone in the classroom I find peace, and grace takes over and there is no space for the ego to act out. I become the highest in me, and from that space wonderful things happen and I am able to serve the people around me.

Jan: “How do you see yourself as a teacher? (as guide? a seeker? a pathfinder? an explorer? a helper? a healer?)”

Tataya: “I truly believe I am not the teacher. Something happens when we all sit down and center. Something greater than myself takes over, and through me that greater force taps into the needs of the group and gives them what they need. I just allow myself to be the channel through which those great teachings happen. And as the practitioners are learning so I am--with the presence of each and everyone  of them, and at the end when we chant and are grateful, so I am, and I get up feeling exactly like if I did the practice with them--very blessed. . .”

Jan: “What can practitioners get out of remaining faithful to a summer practice?”

Tataya: “Well, summer, fall, winter or spring--truly yoga is such an essential tool for anyone and everyone for whatever they are doing in life. By being dedicated, disciplined and setting your priorities in a way that your nurtures yourself. When you nurture yourself, you are able to enjoy the splendor of life--enjoy your summer without feeling it went by so quickly--to enjoy every ray of light, every hot day, every second and every day like it was unique. So every day you get to live the best day ever!”

“The great thing about summer and yoga practice is that because of the heat the body is very relaxed. The muscles are softer, so the postures become easier to perform, and if you like the challenge, the workout its great! You get to sweat and eliminate more toxins from the body because of the extra heat. It’s like having a hot yoga class without a heater!!! --with your bodies natural temperature.”

Jan: “I'm thinking that summer could provide refreshment that gives foundation to the remaining year?”

“Yes, especially for the early risers. If you come to the 5:45 am class and start early your day with a yoga practice, take advantage of the sun coming out early, we promise you won’t regret it! Lock in your yoga routine so when the cold shows up you're already on a roll, and nothing, not even a snow storm, will take you away from the most important thing in your day. . .which is you and how you take care of yourself through a yoga practice.”

Important Notice:

Last year we promised Thomas's sister we would come to visit her family this year, and yes, I know we recently returned from a trip to Venezuela, but we want to honor our promise. We are going to Canada from July 7-21 and are looking forward to our time with Thomas's family! However, this time we will be offering a full schedule of classes and have secured wonderful substitute teachers. We hope you will take full advantage of yoga under other instructors. As many of you know, your yoga practice is enhanced by different approaches. Come see!

Movie of the month--"The 11th Hour"

Not your usual summer fun flick but not to be missed. Here's what Amazon editorial reviewer had to say:

"Comparisons to Al Gore's Oscar-winning slide show will be inevitable, but there's a key difference between the two documentaries. An Inconvenient Truth was aimed at the PBS set, while Leonardo DiCaprio's The 11th Hour combines a traditional structure with a more MTV-friendly pace. . . Speakers include former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, Cambridge physicist Stephen Hawking, and progressive CEO Ray Anderson, hero of The Corporation. . . The 11th Hour is, at heart, a call to arms. It begins by taking a look at the causes of global warming before exploring solutions, from eating organic to building with solar power. There isn't a ton of new information for environmental experts, but DiCaprio and his team have assembled a thought-provoking primer for neophytes and potential activists."

Book of the Month--
After the Ecstasy, the Laundry
by Jack Kornfield

The title of the book, After the Ecstasy, the Laundry, captures what many of us may have felt leaving class for home or other times when we strive to build an inner peace in the outer clamor of everyday life. Trying to be more present to life while life remains present on its own terms, can be an issue not only for us lowly seekers, but for the highly attained too. Accomplished Buddhist and psychologist Jack Kornfield takes this premise to examine the course of spiritual
growth--from seeking, through enlightenment for some, to the days that then follow for all--which he insightfully explains and tellingly enlivens with "in-their-own-words" accounts from his many conversations with spiritual teachers of assorted traditions: Buddhist, yogic, Christian, Sufi, Jewish, and so on. The differences between the various practices easily fade as the commonality and humanity of their experience comes plainly forward. At times the writing may lean toward sentimental or pat, like so many books of the kind, but it never slips too far. And its clarity and content prevail to the end, moving me to share this review with you.
