Letter from Cindy Gibbons of Colorado

"I love coming to Lincoln to see my friend and sister (in spirit), Lu Milius, and to practice with Tataya and Thomas. Lu introduced me to them a few years ago when they were teaching at another location. I have learned so much from both instructors. They are  grounded in their methodology and teachings of yoga. They have encouraged me to take risks and try postures I didn't think I could do. I have also learned more about the spiritual aspects of yoga from them. I wish they were closer so I could take more of their classes. Thomas and Tataya are two very beautiful people and dedicated to what they give each of us. I am so thankful their lives have touched mine."

"I had experienced chronic neck and back pain since 1995. An MRI and other tests helped doctors  determine I have degenerative arthritis in C5 and 4 and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS). Poor posture I developed working with small children for many years had contributed to my body state too. I learned too late that I should have been squatting to be at the level of my 5 and 6 year old students."

"Alas, yoga came into my life in 2000. I practiced on my own with Rodney Yee videos until a studio opened in Montrose, Colorado. Eight years later, I feel great. I have strength and flexibility I didn't have before. My physical issues have diminished drastically. I still have setbacks due to stress or my "don't know when to quit" (gardening, cleaning, etc.) syndrome. Yoga is the constant in my life. It has become my stability to recovery when I do have a setback. I have learned as long as I practice consistently, the reward is great."

Yoga and Dance--Pathways to Home

Believe it or not, I can certainly relate to yoga students who come to our Yoga for Stiff people workshops! On Sunday we had a great group of people for our second such workshop. As I’ve said in an earlier newsletter, I used to be super stiff. I distinctly remember sitting down to eat a Big Mac in high school, and I couldn’t even sit cross legged. I was OK with that though because no one else could either! (I later became a vegetarian--or you might call it a breadatarian since I substituted bread for meat--poor choice.)

My last year in high school someone dared me to try out for the women’s dance troupe. Oddly enough I made it, and my world changed! Dance became my life. As part of my dance training in college, I was also introduced to yoga. It was nothing like the yoga we now teach but more of a stretching session with focused breath. I was taught a routine that I tweaked a little and practice very morning for about four years. This simple routine laid the groundwork for where I am today. In retrospect, I wish I had become fully immersed in yoga then.

When I began personal Ashtanga practice in about 2001, my strength and focus excelled. Wow! I’d feel superhuman now, if I’d started that type of practice in the beginning. That’s why Tataya and I aim to offer a fuller scope of yoga so people can begin yoga with a broader foundation and awareness of its possibilities.

If you didn’t come (you missed a terrific time!), you may have seen the Journal Star article on Monday about our African Dance workshop. As always, we had a blast! I love teaching those workshops andgiving people even with no dance experience a way to let loose and express themselves.

Tataya says I am the most myself when dancing. I know I feel free, truly free--of thoughts, work, responsibility. I am free to explore, radiate, express, and expose joy.I feel untouchable--at my highest--truly me! African Dance is healing to me. It’s in my blood. It’s where I go to run away and also to engage the world.

I grabbed onto dance so quickly when I first began because as a late bloomer, it was an outlet for me. I could express myself without limitation. You might think that technique or formalities of dance genres would have been restricting, but I found that freedom comes from limitations--a wall to push against. I felt great beauty in that.

My yoga has a similar to African dance in its approach. In Yoga, the Vedantic philosophies, lunar in nature and requiring particular guidelines, contrast and compliment the Tantric philosophies that are solar in nature and involve purity, intuition, and internal drive. Together they provide amazing possibilities.Getting to share the possibilities and see you awaken to them yourself--I am a blessed man!

When our feet hit the ground after our vacation in Canada, Tataya and I were off and running. We are glad to be home and back at YB&B. While on vacation, Tataya had time to be a yoga student again, attending sometimes two classes a day, and I had time to reconnect with my family--walks in the park, resting, relaxing, reflection.  As Tataya said, “Now we’re ready to take the bull by the 'thorns'”--she means “horns.”(You know those idioms are sometimes tricky for second language speakers!) We returned from Canada refreshed and full of new ideas, wanting to refine what we do and to give you the best experience possible at YBB.

                                                              Namaste,
                                                              Thomas

P.S. You're invited to join Tataya and me for a drink this Friday night at the Mars Bar around 8:30 to celebrate my 31 trips around the sun! (It's hard to be exact about the time--we have children!)

Workshop for Cyclists and Runners--Sunday, August 25 from 1-3 pm

If you are a cyclist or runner, you probably know what it is to push yourself to the max. You may need to learn how to create balance, relax and breathe. That’s why we’re offering a workshop especially for you! So whether you’re an extreme athlete or a casual one, you will benefit from yoga.

You see, cycling and running work the largest muscle groups of the hips and legs. Unfortunately, the repetitive motion of both can cause muscle imbalance and habitual tightness. Yoga is a perfect way to restore balance, eliminate soreness, tightness and muscle fatigue.

This workshop is beginner-friendly and designed to help you discover the body’s amazing power to realign and repair itself. Come explore a yoga class designed especially for your needs. Your cycling and running will never be the same again!

The Journey of Fragrance

When you step into Yoga Body and Balance studio, you leave your shoes at the door. Why not leave your emotional baggage there too as you step onto the yogic path? As you may have realized, yoga is much more than a deep lunge and a deep breath. To fully live, we need to be present in the moment and in our bodies--to connect to our inner feelings. Feelings are hard to pinpoint, yet most of us are controlled by them in every moment. We tend to react rather than make a choice to respond. In yoga feelings come up throughout our practice.  At YBB we aim to provide an ultimate experience, and to do so we use essential oils at the end of every class to assist you to be in touch with your feeling body.

Fragrances remind us of feelings, carry us to distant islands or enable to face undesirable situations. Young Living Essential Oil Company has a developed a “feelings” line of blended therapeutic grade essential oils designed to help release negative memories and promote personal progression. They are:

Forgiveness
Harmony
Inner Child
Present Time
Release
Valor

These six essential oil blends were formulated by D. Gary Young to provide emotional clearance and self renewal. These are the oils we will be using for the next few months. If you would like any information about them or are interested in purchasing any of them, just let us know. Enjoy the ones that please and observe ones that may put you off a little. That very one might have something for you.

" Negative experiences and ideas are recorded in our brains and locked into our memories throughout our lives. These memories range from mild to extreme and affect our health and happiness. In order to become who we are intended to be, we must erase these negatives and reprogram our thoughts to make positive ideas our reality." D. Gary Young
