Quote of the Month
"Having access to the joy and wonderment of life is the antidote to
feelings of scarcity and loss. It allows you to meet life's
difficulties with an open heart. The understanding you gain from
practicing gratitude frees you from being lost or identified with
either the negative or the positive aspects of life, letting you simply
meet life in each moment as it rises."
~ Philip Moffitt

Poem
from practitioner Maureen Gilmour
The beauty of silence surrounds me. The presence of others is felt. Integrating body, mind, and spirit... flowing... The gentle, calming voice of the yoga instructor leads us on a journey of self-awareness. ...feeling humbly grateful to God for the gift of life.

With warm gratitude. . .

I was thinking the other day how I wanted to share with friends and family who don't live here in Lincoln why we live here, why we absolutely love it and why we want them to come:
- Because it has an amazing community of people that care for each other and take care of each other.
- Because it's a city with the feeling of a small town.
- Because since we arrived, all we have received has been love, support and encouragement.
- Because people believe in what we do,.
- Because on a winter day five seconds after my car got stuck (with the kids in it) in the middle of the street, my car was surrounded by men and women pushing the car, and I didn't even have to do a thing!
- Because on my birthday when I didn't really want to make my own birthday cake, I got 3 birthday cakes by surprise!!
- Because people are always asking, "How may I help?"
- Because It is my home.
- Because when Jai was born, people brought lunch and dinner for 2 months!
- Because when we said we where opening YBB, so many put their effort and dollars into it to make it happen.
- Because when we where in most need, someone gave us a sizable check as a long term loan with no interest.
- Because someone brought flowers from their garden to the studio every week.
- Because people don't stop surprising me with their generosity, love & kindness e-ve-ry day of my life!
I LOVE LINCOLN! THANK YOU FOR BEING MY HOME!

As Temperatures Cool Down -- Warm UP! Yes, it is the season to warm up to your practice. As we see less and less of our sun, we begin 'turning in,' in many ways. Regardless of the level or style of yoga class, we are demanding much of our bodies. My suggestion: warm up and be in no hurry. During the winter we generally get less exercise, and when the opportunity presents itself to move, we all too often jump in. Exercise physiologists repeatedly state it takes minimum 20 minutes to warm up efficiently and often times 30 minutes or more to be thorough.
I begin most of my classes with some sort of sun salutation. This stimulates the endocrine system and begins to warm up the body. In every practice, we bring joints through a full range of motion. The muscles continuously engage, stretch and release, and connective tissue gets pushed to its endpoint. Heat enables us to do these things safely and continuously as it gets even colder. Cooler air temperature around us tend to dissipate our heat which makes warm up even more important. Ironically we feel we are warmed up when we begin to sweat, but sweating only means the body is in a cool down process and is working to bring our temperature down.
To truly warm up we must overcome our body's ability to stay cool and heat the cooler air around us. Old traditional Yoga and Buddhist practice involved a practitioner being draped in a blanket and dunked in a river. It was the practitioner's practice to heat and dry as many blankets as possible throughout a night from the generation of his own heat. As they weren't moving, the heat they generated came from prana, or breath. This illustrates the amazing capacity we have to generate heat, through breath alone. Now is the time to take our attention to see our connection with the world around us. Our practice is our own doing and at the same time subject to the energies (and temperatures) around us. Take some time, listen to yourself in a different way, BE THERE and warm up!

Up & Coming
Holiday Bazaar -- Saturday, Nov. 22
We are excited to be hosting our first ever "Local Artisans Bazaar" right in the studio! Yoga Body and Balance is pleased to present a warm, friendly venue for local talent to display their wares just in time for the holiday season. This event will be taking place on Saturday, November 22 from 1 pm-5 pm. This will be in part to benefit the Friendship home. We'll have food, drinks, conversation and, of course, hand crafted art by some of Lincoln's finest established and budding artisans.
We invite all of you to come enjoy (and contribute to) this atmosphere while supporting your neighbors. Please bring your family and your friends and spread the word to help make this venture a smashing success. The kinds of things you can expect to see include but not limited to: crocheted wearables; semi-precious stone jewelry; hand embroidered pillows; paintings; ACEO cards; poetry books crafted by author; handmade journals; hat boxes; a novel; musical recordings; baby clothes; chakra readings; plus a variety of gift baskets from several vendors and more. This is also an opportunity for you to join in the fun. If you or anyone you know is interested in selling your hand-crafted wares, please email Katie @ zealousy5000@hotmail.com. Thank you in advance for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the Bazaar!

Book of the Month--Meditations from the Mat by Rolf Gates and Katrina Kenison

The meditations we've been using in class recently are from Rolf Gates, yoga teacher whose classes in Boston are filled with 80 plus students from 6:30 in the morning until 9:00 at night.
"His is a wonderful book of instructive and encouraging daily meditations centered on the practice of yoga. Gates synthesizes his experiences as a yoga student and teacher, former army ranger, and recovering alcoholic, and explores the practice of yoga in a fresh, relevant manner perfect for American readers. Each day's reflection begins with a thought-provoking quote and then explores one intriguing aspect of yoga philosophy. Gates weaves stories of his own remarkable healing and growth with the yoga sutras of Patanjali, and provides illuminating and moving explanations of how yoga teachings apply to real-life situations." From Jane Tuma of Booklst.
