Dear Gary,
Exciting new changes are in the wind! Thanks to your response to our recent survey, we have made the decision to turn up the heat! Hot Yoga classes will begin later this month. We have extraordinary guest instructors coming, and a brand new schedule with more classes will be announced soon. Watch for notification!
palm flame The heat is on!! Hot Yoga is on the way!

Hot Yoga has so many benefits, and we are excited to share them with you. In just a few weeks YBB will offer Hot Yoga classes!

Just what is Hot Yoga? It is a name for yoga that borrows the methods of Bikram Choudhury. Studios that use his method call it Hot Yoga since Bikram Yoga is trademarked. Bikram Chaoudhury's technique included the repetition of 26 postures, each held for about one minute in a room of about 100 to 105 degrees. At YBB, and many other studios around the world, Hot Yoga has some individual differences. Our Hot Yoga will be our traditional flowing style of yoga with heat added, between 85 and 95 degrees. When you are in a flow or Vinyasa class, heat already builds because of the fluidity, so 105 gets pretty roasty. The heat we will use will be radiant heat so the room won't feel too hot, but you will certainly heat up.

What are the values of Hot Yoga?anatomy
In a heated environment our connective tissues, muscles, and supportive structures become more elastic and provide greater flexibility and range of motion. We are allowed a more fluid-like stretch with less chance of injury and greater possibilities of using injured body parts without further harm. In Hot Yoga, postures deepen much more effectively.Blood vessels dilate and widen in the heat. This means greater blood volume and oxygenation to muscles, organs, glands, and tissues for greater effectiveness in functioning and higher cell waste and toxin removal. The sweat then continues to detoxify this waste and eliminates it through the skin. For all of you with cold hands and feet, the heat improves circulation to extremities.

When you walk in the room, the heat may make it harder to breathe. This too is a good thing because we rethink how to breathe. We can actually increase diaphragm strength and increase the amount of oxygen to our lungs. Turn up the heat and you turn up your metabolism. When our metabolism speeds up, we speed up the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids in the body, and we burn fat more effectively. Bikram literature says, "Fat may be redistributed and burned as energy during the class. It is common to lose centimeters of shape in a very short time."  In addition, cellular metabolism and metabolism of the digestive system improves. This means greater efficiency of your system as a whole. Recent studies are revealing up to 70% of your immune system is dependent on your digestion. The immune system functioning is enhanced by heat much like a fever fights infection:  T-Cell functioning is improved.

Hot Yoga provides psychological and mental benefits as well as physical ones. In this challenging environment, we strengthen our focus -- as we slip or drip, we hone our determination, concentration, and our self-control. Heat improves nervous function and thus messages are carried more efficiently to and from your brain. Now you see why heat can be a wonderful help to your practice, but you may wonder if it's natural. In India where yoga began, it is normal to have temperatures in this range, and yogis there have received all the benefits that come with it for hundreds of years. Yes, we are in Nebraska, but we are still tropical creatures. We all like warm sweaters and bedding in the middle of winter don't we? Even Pitta constitutions are supported as their heat is pacified following the practice.

Hot yoga at YBB is going to be a pleasure. Our class schedule will be increasing by 1/3 and you'll have every opportunity to grab a friend and experience this enriching addition to yoga. I have three words to help you plan ahead for Hot Yoga: HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE, and do it before the class begins. Drink 16 ounces of no caffeinated fluid in the two hours prior to class. I look forward to seeing you on the mat.

In Health (always),

Thomas

Discover a New Perspective

Remember the story of Three Blind Mice who tried to get to know an elephant for the first time? Feeling of his tusks, the first mouse thought the elephant was hard, smooth and pointed. The second mouse thought the elephant was rough, thin and floppy as he touched the ear. The third mouse, holding the tail, thought the elephant was hairy and scraggly. Like the elephant, YOGA IS BIG! And I'm not talking about its popularity, but its scope. Many types of yoga exist with many facets - Hatha Yoga, Pranayama Yoga, Sattwic Yoga, and on and on. While Tataya and I offer you a daily experience of the practice and philosophy of yoga, our special guest instructors provide new insights. They shine a light on another whole part of yoga or explain it in a new way. That's why you shouldn't miss r.r. Shakti and Theresa Murphy, our guest instructors this month or Nova in May and Anthony Bogart coming this fall! I guarantee you'll see yoga, and yourself, in exhilarating and impelling new ways.

Promoting Peace Through Inner Power

"...There are so many mixed messages about how a woman should behave. Girls are subjected to images of Victoria's Secret-style beauty and sex from a very young age. As we grow, we become vulnerable to the unrealistic ideal of how a woman should look and perform. It is difficult to make peace with our bodies, when for so many of us our bodies hold such pressure and shame."

"Finding our inner power and recognizing our choices is the most basic need of all. We can't always choose what happens to us ... what we can choose is our response to those things," Shakti says.

Shakti has traveled extensively throughout the world gaining insight, experience, and inspiration bringing yoga and hope to people from all walks of life. Sharing the practice with people who have disabilities, survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, cancer patients, those struggling with substance abuse challenges, and others with special needs, Shakti is a firm believer in the power of yoga to awaken the body's own healing process. If you want to experience joy, real beauty and the power of yoga to heal your soul, join Shakti!
