Quotation of the
Month
"Can you remember what it was like to walk in the midst of a world of miracles? Can you remember ever traveling within a world of pure delight with a joy untainted by craving or aversion? What happened to that world? All yoga, including the Buddha's yoga, is often called 'the path of return'-- a return to our true home, which we eventually come to see was never really lost." Review by
Jennifer Conway
In the new
book, I Feel Good;
10 Easy Steps to Better Health, Alix Litwack (my good friend) and
Deb McClure-Smith condense their decades of knowledge and hands-on
experience into bite size, nuggets of wisdom for readers of all ages,
shapes, and sizes. They pare down the vast world of nutrition
information into the easy-to-understand building blocks of good health.
Included in the book are 40 delicious, easy-to prepare recipes that
address specific nutritional changes. I Feel Good does not ask you to
count calories, eliminate an entire food group, go on a diet or purchase
any equipment. This snappy read does provide the simple path to make
informed choices about the foods worth consuming. From planning, to
shopping and cooking-- readers learn how to be healthier eaters. I loved
it! Available at Amazon.com.

There is a saying, "You get what you give," and many times I've thought,
"Whoa! We must been doing something good here at YBB because we are
surrounded by the most amazing people !" I mean it... yesterday I
went to a bakery a friend told me made gluten-free bread, and as I walked
into the store, to my surprise, a yoga client was at the register helping
people! Of course, I am delighted to see him; he is happy to see me
too. And we feel so special and connected. He shows me where the bread
is. I decide to grab two loaves because they look great, but when I pay,
he is charging me for only one, and I say, "Hey, I have two loaves
here," and he says, "No, no. One is on the house, so you can try it and
tell me what you think!"
And I think once again... Ah! Lincoln...
I love it! The people! The miracles! Events like this happen to me all
the time, and since becoming a US citizen there is a Me and my
mom celebrating my U.S. citizenship | sense of
"YES, I feel American...I feel Nebraskan! I am a Lincolnite!" To find
this place, it took me finding my inner home... It took me leaving
Venezuela and walking all over the world thinking that my life was out
there waiting for me...just to find later on that my true home was
waiting for me..inside of me...in my heart.
So thank you all for
welcoming me to my home too, to Lincoln, to the US, and I want to
welcome you to your heart, to your home base, to your Yoga! Now that
the sun is out, and we're all so excited about spring, welcome the
transitions of nature, the elements. I invite you to prepare yourself
for the rest of the year through your yoga practice so this spring
becomes the best spring ever!
With great Joy, Your fellow
American and Yogini (^_^) Tataya

Spring Cleaning Your Asana Practice With Props by Seth Liddy
Props are a valuable resource for helping us find the proper alignment when trying a pose for the first time, for breaking old habits, or for discovering new physical possibilities. Props are tools that keep us honest and deepen our experience in a pose. When we approach the mat, it's important to be open to experiencing it though it were our first time. Though it might not be the first time to the mat in our lifetime, it is our first time for that moment.
To spice up morning practice I sometimes use a belt around my shoulders for the entire sequence. Not only is it a helpful reminder to keep my shoulders back and down, it also makes for a very challenging practice.
We often attach ourselves to the idea of a pose such that we compromise the structure of the pose to get there. For example, our mind may get stuck on the idea that to truly be in Trikonasana (triangle), our hand must touch the floor. Often when we first place the hand down, our side-body becomes curved like a balloon; we lean inside of the front leg, the scapulae creep toward the ears, and more. However, the use of a block to the outside of the foot helps us not collapse to the floor.
Urdhava Mukha Svanasana or upward facing dog is a pose that be enhanced by using two blocks, one under each hand. With greater elevation, it becomes easier to draw the abdomen forward and upward. Be sure that your shoulder joint is over the wrist or slightly behind, but never in front of wrists, while pressing firmly the inner hand at the base of the thumb and index finger to prevent wrist injury. If you start to feel bunching in lower back, begin to widen the sit bones, by rolling the thighs towards each other while pressing through the big toes to lengthen the inside of the legs.
Parsvakonasana or side angle pose is a great with a block placed outside the bent knee. In all standing poses, we need to ensure that our base is solid. Begin by checking that the knee is above the ankle and looking at the second and third toe. Have a straight and long back leg grounding the outside of the back heel and pushing down on the pinky toe ball mound. From here, now lift the arch of the back foot and lengthen from the hip of the bent knee leaning forward to place the hand on the block. Once the hand reaches the block, press our knee into the down arm. Now stretch the arm towards the wall in front stretching through the pinky. Rotate the pinky side hand of the out stretched arm towards the floor and have the palm face the wall behind you. Check to make sure that your shoulders stay away from the ears. As you look up, your cheek will touch the triceps of the arm. Again lengthen the side body, especially closest to the knee, and do not allow the ribs to curve like a balloon. Once here begin to slowly lift the down hand off the block to build core strength, and to ensure you do not place too much weight onto the hand.
Don't be afraid to use props whether or not an instructor suggests them.
Remember it's your yoga practice so you want to honor your own body and respect
its limitations. I hope these few suggestions help with old habits and find new depth in the spring cleaning of your practice! See you on the mat.
